Upselling is proposing the sale of something that complements or adds on to the experience of the original purchase. Other similar terms are suggestive selling, or cross selling. In hospitality, upselling increases guest happiness, retention and revenue. For example, when a front desk agent upsells a reservation to a suite, it is often at a discount, and it provides definite benefits to guests.
Many hospitality operations use upselling as a regular means for additional revenue. This can be done because upselling is a carefully planned product/service offered to guests. Hospitality professionals need to learn how to operate and execute an upsell program.
